How to Pronounce Terceira Island
After years of working with visitors from all over the world, I have learned one thing: Terceira is apparently not the easiest island name to pronounce. I have heard Tercera, Terciera, Terseira, Terceire, Teceiea... and probably a few others that I have forgotten along the way. No judgement. Portuguese is not exactly making things easy.

So, How Do You Pronounce Terceira?
The easiest way to think about it is something close to ter-SAY-ra.
It is not a perfect Portuguese pronunciation, but it gets you much closer than most first attempts.
The tricky part for many visitors is the middle of the word. In Portuguese, the “cei” sound does not work the way an English speaker might expect, and that is usually where versions like Tercera or Terciera begin to appear.
And then there is the Portuguese r, which adds another small challenge depending on where you are from.
Why Is Terceira So Hard to Say?
Mostly because Portuguese pronunciation does not always match what English speakers expect to see on the page.
The combination of letters in Terceira can look a little confusing if you are seeing the word for the first time, especially the “cei” in the middle.
Then there is the fact that many visitors first hear the name quickly, in an airport, on a flight announcement or in conversation, and try to reproduce it from memory later.
That is probably how we end up with so many different versions of the same island name.
The Versions I Hear Most Often
Over the years, I have heard and seen plenty of different versions of Terceira.
Some of the ones I have come across are Tercera, Terciera, Terceria, Teceira, Terseira, Tersiera, Terceirea and even Teceiea.
Then there are the versions where Terceira is right, but the rest goes wrong: Terceira Isand and Terceira Iland have both made an appearance too.
Some are probably influenced by Spanish, some come from trying to write the word the way it sounds, and some are simply creative.
At this point, if the word sounds even remotely close, we usually know which island you mean.
GOOD TO KNOW
Tercera is the Spanish word for “third”, so that version is not completely random. But the island’s name in Portuguese is Terceira.
If you say something close to ter-SAY-ra, you are already doing pretty well.

What Does Terceira Actually Mean?
Terceira simply means “third” in Portuguese.
The origin of the name is usually explained in two ways. One tradition says the island was called Terceira because it was the third island of the Azores to be discovered, after Santa Maria and São Miguel.
Another explanation connects the name to the old expression “Ilhas Terceiras”, which was used for the Azores as a whole.
The island was also known in its early history as the Island of Jesus Christ, before the name Terceira became the one that remained.
A NAME WITH MORE THAN ONE STORY
As with many old place names, there is more than one explanation for how Terceira got its name.
What is certain is that the name has been used for centuries, and today it is one of the most recognisable names in the Azores.

Over the years, I have heard and seen quite a few creative versions of the name Terceira.
Don’t Worry, We Know What You Mean
If you are visiting Terceira and you are worried about saying the name perfectly, don’t be.
People here are used to hearing different accents and different attempts at the word. Nobody expects visitors to arrive speaking Portuguese.
And, to be fair, most of us would probably struggle with plenty of place names in other languages too.
So give it a try. If it sounds somewhere close to Terceira, we will almost certainly know what you mean.
A Small Word With a Lot Behind It
Terceira may be a difficult word to pronounce at first, but for us it is much more than just the name of the island.
It is the name we see on road signs, hear in conversations, use when talking about home and carry with us when we travel.
So whether you say it perfectly or need a few attempts, that part does not really matter.
What matters is that you made it here.
